A cocoa tree nursery

My husband speaks English, the old lady said softly. A few minutes later entered the diminutive 64 year old owner of the cocoa tree farm and nursery.

We had received our first shipment of beautiful beans selected by Mrs Lieu a few weeks before and were eager to see where they came from.

The little farm on the side of Highway 20 stretched back into the hills, the young cocoa tree saplings protected from the sun by tall cashew trees.

Mr Duc and Mrs Lieu live alone, they never had children. Their faces tell of a hard life, that the quiet comfort of the present days cannot quite make go away; asked where he learned such perfect English, Mr. Duc explains that he once was an interpreter for the US army.

As a parting gift Mr Duc gave us 4 seedlings from different Trinitario hybrids that we will plant in the garden of our chocolate workshop in Saigon.
